The recent Obama 20 Issues Quiz led to several messages asking me to clarify Obama's position on same-sex Marriage. Several expressed surprise that I believed Obama was in favor of same-sex marriage. He is.
During the Primary Obama's position had always been that he was in favor of "Civil Unions" but opposed "Marriage" between same sex couples.
Obama changed that position in a letter reported on July 1, 2008 . By opposing California Prop 8, the Defense of Marriage Act, Obama is supporting same-sex Marriage.Obama stakes out position on California gay marriage ballot initiative
By Jeff Mitchell July 1 08Reversing a previous position where he said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the individual states, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would oppose the California ballot proposition seeking a ban against same-sex nuptials.
In a letter read before the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast in San Francisco on Sunday, Obama said he would oppose Prop. 8, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act that would amend the California Constitution to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.
"I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination...." Obama wrote.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP presumptive presidential nominee, has endorsed the proposition's passage.
