Obama patriotism speech, June 30 2008 Independence, Missouri
As we begin our fourth century as a nation, it is easy to take the extraordinary nature of America for granted. But it is our responsibility as Americans and as parents to instill that history in our children, both at home and at school. The loss of quality civic education from so many of our classrooms has left too many young Americans without the most basic knowledge of who our forefathers are, or what they did, or the significance of the founding documents that bear their names. Too many children are ignorant of the sheer effort, the risks and sacrifices made by previous generations, to ensure that this country survived war and depression; through the great struggles for civil, and social, and worker’s rights. Can someone please enlighten me. If we are beginning our "fourth century as a nation" then we must have been founded as a Nation in 1708?
Yet wiki says
.
The nation was founded by thirteen colonies of Great Britain located along the Atlantic seaboard. Proclaiming themselves "states," they issued the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The rebellious states defeated Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War, the first successful colonial war of independence.[9] A federal convention adopted the current United States Constitution on September 17, 1787; its ratification the following year made the states part of a single republic. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten constitutional amendments, was ratified in 1791
What am I missing? Surely, his speechwriter must know something that I don't know, as I just pulled this para from his WRITTEN text...so its not like this was an off-the-cuff reference to 57 states. The speech is called The America we Love...so I guess conceivably he could be talking about a different America than the one I live in that was founded in 1776...but I doubt it.
It is not possible that the man at the top of ticket of one of our two main parties neither knows how many states are in the USA, nor that the country was founded in 1776. So I must be missing something.
Please enlighten me with a comment...so I can delete this post. But if he's wrong, and IF he becomes President, how long before we're forced to rename DC, New Gaffe City?

there are 2 ways do the math for this comment. the 1st is to start at 2008 and subtract 300 which would equal 1708 and is clearly nowhere near 1776. The other way is to count by centuries. This country was founded in 1776 so the 1st century was the 18th century, the second century was the 19th century, the 3rd century was the 20th century and now we are just entering the 4th century of the United States which is the 21st century.
You also seem to mistake the 57 states quote. Obama was joking when he said that, making a reference to our occupation in other countries and territories which do not actually get a vote but because of troops or civilians being stationed there are still part of the vote.
My hat's off to emzo for creatively defending the indefensible
While creative; he's wrong!
1) Taking the 57 states comment
http://obamawtf.blogspot.com/2008/07/obama-tells-oregonians-alaskans-and.html
The video speaks for itself...and tbh I think the "joke" defense is the least plausible of several wrong ones I've seen offered.
2) Your explanation of the "fourth century gaffe" CAN NOT explain why he says "As we begin our fourth century." If your theory was right the "As we begin" phrase the would have occurred at the start of 2000.
This was another gaffe, all be it highly embarrassing, as it follows not only the 57 States blip, but his ignorance of the meaning of our last holiday, Memorial Day.
That we have to "do the math" is the problem isn't it? The gaffe list seems endless!
