Have Obama and Pelosi awakened a reluctant sleeping giant: the conservative side of the GOP?

According to conservative pundit Robert Novak writing in Human Affairs, Obama and Pelosi may have recently hit a couple of nerves which will likely help his major opponent firm up support from the conservative side of his party:

1. While Obama has been inching rightward carefully (most recently on his "I am patriot" speech), almost overlooked is his announced opposition to the California initiative on same-sex marriage. That could mobilize social conservatives nationwide.
   
   
2. Another impetus to energize the social right may be the announcement of support for "equal time" legislation by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)--the so-called fairness doctrine. This represents a threat to the very existence of small religious radio stations across the country that could stir Christian conservatives out of their political lethargy.

Novak concludes that while Obama is clearly substantially head in the enthusiasm category...ie the noise being made by the Obamatrons v McCain's less vocal supporters, on a state by state basis, the election is too close to call.
